Abstract
The Rural Urban Classification (RUC) is a classification of OA/LSOA/MSOA and LAD geographies, released to support analysts and policy makers to produce statistics assessing differences between places with containing rural or urban characteristics. This is an essential classification with substantial stakeholder need. The Rural Urban Classification (RUC) has been produced each decade since 2001. The 2021 Rural Urban Classification (RUC) is a standardised method for classifying geographies as rural or urban developed in collaboration with ONS Geography, DEFRA and Welsh Government. The RUC layers improve on the 2011 RUC layers by adding additional context through the inclusion of Relative Access, a proxy measure for potential access to economic opportunities and amenities.  Several further improvements have been made, including simplification of the taxonomy, alignment of the OA, LSOA, MSOA and LAD methodologies, and improved resolution of the density calculations.
